Gauge Decimals in Inches Conversion Chart

How to Measure Steel Tube

When ordering pipe or tube, it’s important to use the correct terminology because they are not ordered the same way. When measuring tube, the term “gauge” is used to represent the wall thickness measurement. “O.D.” or “Outside Diameter” is the full width measurement of the pipe, including the gauge measurement. The Boyer Steel team will work with you to understand your needs and no matter the terminology, we are able to provide the correct material.

These gauge sizes are based on the Birmingham Wire Gauge and Stubs Wire Gauge standards. For gauge measurements, the higher the number, the thinner the wall of the tube. For example, 10 gauge equals .134 inches and 20 gauge equals .035 inches.

How to Order Steel Tube

Both the O.D. and gauge measurements are used in “proper” tube orders. For example, the proper way to order tube would be, “2 inch 10 gauge tube.” The O.D. measurement is first (2 inches) followed by the gauge size (10 gauge or .134 inches).
